Soaring gold prices remain well below its 1980 record high in real terms, according to HSBC’s leading gold analyst James Steel. Gold breached the $910 an ounce mark last week, a record high for the precious metal, although is did drop back below the $900 level as fears of recession dragged commodity prices down. In the longer term, analysts remain divided over how further the price can go. However Steel argues today’s prices are still well below the all-time high in inflation adjusted terms. “In real terms the all-time high is $2.000 an ounce,” he said.
