It became a very well-known fact that during the Labour government's administration, there were almost as many pensions ministers as years of Blair and Brown being in power.

Was that because pensions are not sexy (can they ever be?), was it because Labour does not do pensions (echoing its comments about religion) or was it because it did not think there were any votes in the area? It was perhaps a combination of all three, and largely an opportunity missed because, in its early days in power, Labour had the very able and capable Alistair Darling looking after the portfolio.
