It used to be said you could not win elections talking about pensions. In fact, I think I have said it once or twice in this column over the years.

But now the two main parties have realised far from being a vote loser, pensions could be a vote winner, as evidenced by national newspapers regularly putting stories about pensions on their front pages. Pensions have replaced Princess Diana on the front of the Daily Express, although miracle cures for heart problems are still most important to the readership. The interest in pensions has been ‘helped’ by the steady closure of final salary schemes and the ongoing debate about public sector arrangements.
