Alliance Trust appoints Lord Smith as chairman

Alliance Trust has appointed Robert Smith, Lord Smith of Kelvin, as its new chairman.

The move comes after several changes on the board of the trust last year following a shake-up by activist investors Elliott Advisers, which resulted in two new non-executives being appointed last year.  Former chairman Karin Forseke announced in November that she would be stepping down on 31 December, leaving the board to seek a new chairman as part of a new strategy for the trust. Lord Smith is expected to take up the position on 1 February, subject to regulatory approval, while Gregor Stewart will become deputy chairman and Karl Stenberg will be senior independent director.
