French President Nicolas Sarkozy threatened to exit the euro unless German Chancellor Angela Merkel backed the EU's €750bn safety net for the single currency.
Sarkozy said he would walk out of the talks and warned of lasting damage to Franco-German relations unless Merkel agreed to the deal, the Guardian reports. "It was a standup argument. He was shouting and bawling," an official in Brussels said. "It was Sarkozy on steroids," a European diplomat added. "He is always very energetic. This time he was very emotional, too."
