After the noughties, perhaps we should call this decade the austies, as in austerity, or because it sounds a bit like pasty and we know how much the Cabinet likes pasties?

Judging by the election results, the voters in France and Greece do not like the idea of ‘tough economic love.’ But at least the Greeks and French got out and voted, with turnouts ranging from 65% to 80%, while in our local elections it was barely over 30%. Even in the capital, no more than 35% of us could be bothered to choose between Ken or Blondie. No wonder the electorate is apathetic when the world’s financial centre can only muster Ken Livingstone or Boris Johnson, plus a couple of fascists and the well-meaning green or independent candidates.
