Veteran investor George Soros has described how "everything that could go wrong has gone wrong" for the European Union, as he warns of an "existential crisis" in the region.

According to the Financial Times, in a meeting organised by thinktank The European Council on Foreign Relations, Soros said the three challenges for the EU were refugees, territorial disintegration and an austerity policy. Soros, who is founder of the pro-European Open Society Foundation, said these problems had "hindered Europe's economic development".  "The EU is in an existential crisis.
