Jupiter Asset Management has hired Darren Starr as a fund manager on its liquid alternatives business as the firm plans a further fund launch on the back of client demand.
Starr, who has dual US and UK citizenship, joins today from Segantii Capital Management, where he worked as a portfolio manager since September 2016.
He has over ten years' experience managing US equity long-short portfolios across roles at UBS, SAC Global Investors and Caxton.
At Jupiter, Starr will work closely with the absolute return team, including fund managers James Clunie and Mike Buhl-Nielsen. The group's liquid alternatives business already has £1.9bn in assets under management.
The firm plans to launch a UCITS-compliant US equity long/short fund for Starr in the future, subject to regulatory approval.
Magnus Spence (pictured), Jupiter's head of investments, alternatives, said: "Developing and expanding our liquid alternatives capabilities is a key strategic goal for Jupiter. Darren's appointment enables us to strengthen and broaden our presence in this sector.
"We believe there is significant client demand for strategies which are uncorrelated to the performance of the equity market given current valuation levels, particularly in the US equity market, and we look forward to welcoming Darren to the team."
Starr said: "Jupiter has a growing reputation in the liquid alternatives space, and I am excited to be joining the company at this point in its journey. I look forward to working alongside this talented team of investors and adding my own contribution to the success of the business."
