Barclays to cut 1,700 branch jobs in 2014

Barclays is to cut 1,700 UK branch jobs from 2014 as customers move online for services.

There are 1,577 Barclays branches in the UK which employ 33,600 staff, meaning the job cuts are the equivalent of one staff member per branch. Cuts will come from all sectors including cashiers, personal bankers and branch managers, the bank said. Barclays has launched a voluntary redundancy scheme for staff and said staff were "fully consulted" on the changes. The bank said more people are now using banking services online or via their smartphones which meant less demand for branches.
