The tech supremo whose firm is shorting Hargreaves Lansdown

MSD Capital, the family office of Dell Computer founder Michael Dell, has been building a short position in Hargreaves Lansdown as the group's share price takes off.

Regulatory filings show MSD Capital has gradually increased its short position in Hargreaves over the past three months, having opened a short equivalent to 0.87% of the platform giant's share capital last November. After rising 58% last year, Hargreaves shares have soared almost 20% so far in 2013, in large part due to the 15% rise seen last week. That means the group's shares are now 9% above the level at which MSD opened its short on 1 November.
