Bond fund retail sales hit 20-month high in May

Investors continued to exercise caution in their asset allocation in May, with bond and money market funds the most popular and equity funds seeing their first net outflow in 2012.

IMA data showed fixed income was the most popular asset class for the ninth consecutive month with net retail sales of £819m. The figure is well in excess of the monthly average of £494m million for the previous 12 months, and the highest since the £868m in net sales seen in September 2010. In terms of individual sectors, £ Corporate Bond was the most popular among retail investors with inflows of £481m, the highest since August 2010.
