BP completed the ‘bottom kill' of its ruptured Gulf of Mexico oil well yesterday, ending one of the most disastrous chapters in US ecological history.
The disaster, which tragically took the lives of 11 workers, was the worst oil spill in US history and has already cost BP billions in clean-up and compensation. It is likely to result in the company paying billions more in fines. US officials said on Sunday the well was now "effectively dead". The disaster occurred on 20 April, with the explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig and subsequent sinking.
