Deep Dive: Investors split on investment case for UK gilts as yields surge to highest in decades

'We still see gilts as a safe bet'

Investors have argued that an investment case can still be made for UK gilts, despite a rocky start to the year and with yields hitting their highest levels in decades on Wednesday (9 April), but others are more pessimistic.

Their stance comes as the UK economy contends with shaky ground amid US President Donald Trump's global trade war, and after the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) halved Britain's growth prospects for 2025 to 1%.
