US banks and companies are bullish on the economic outlook despite bleak headlines, said David Forsyth, co-manager of Tom Walker's £693m Martin Currie North America fund.

My recent research trip to the US helped confirm our thesis that the country is on a path of steady growth. The over-optimism of six months ago has been replaced with a pessimism that is not supported by evidence on the ground. Talking to analysts and economists yields a completely different picture from what I find in conversations with company executives. Headline figures from recent weeks seem to show the US recovery is not as sustainable as previously thought - the jobless claims number on 2 June was disappointing.
