Pound climbs as Scotland rejects independence

Sterling has surged to a two-year high as Scotland votes to remain part of the United Kingdom, as the results of its historic referendum on independence suggest the 'no' campaign has won by a slim margin.

Although the full result will be revealed later this morning, 80% of votes have been counted, revealing 55% of Scottish voters were against independence and 45% were in favour.  The capital, Edinburgh, backed the no vote by 194,638 to 123,927, while Aberdeen City voted against independence by a margin of more than 20,000 votes. Glasgow voted in favour of independence by 194,779 to 169,347, with Dundee, West Dunbartonshire and North Lanarkshire also voting 'yes', along with several other areas.
