BlackRock's Richard Plackett, manager of the £1.4bn UK Special Situations fund, has identified five small and mid-cap stocks which have helped him add value to his fund.
The manager said small caps had underperformed in recent years, but this was against a backdrop of outperformance over the past half century. Plackett said: "Small cap indices have unusually underperformed in the last five years, but it has still been possible for a fund like ours to top the league tables because of stock picking." The fund has a minimum of 50% in small and mid-cap stocks, with a typical weighting of 65%. This is made up of 40-50 stocks which the manager picks from a universe of around 2000.
