The UK economy has "significantly weakened" with domestic demand at a two-year low, but a recession is not inevitable, the latest quarterly survey by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) concludes.
A new recession in Britain "is not a foregone conclusion," said BCC director-general John Longworth, quoted in the poll of more than 6,000 businesses, despite growing fears the UK could lapse into a downturn this year. But Longworth conceded action was "needed urgently" to tackle short-term stagnation and a lack of business confidence as a result of the eurozone crisis.
