Over 350 hedge funds were liquidated in the first half of the year, an increase of 15% over the first six months of 2007 according to data from Hedge Fund Research. Over 180 liquidations were reported in the second quarter, 10 up on the previous three months. At the current rate, 700 funds will close by the end of the year, around 7% of the industry, according to HFR estimates. This would be an increase of more than 24% over 2007 figures. The record year for hedge fund liquidations was 2005 when nearly 850 closed. Launches have also slowed in the second quarter, with only 240 fund...
