Women have historically made up the majority of the poorest pensioners and this will continue to be the case unless urgent action is taken. Of the 2.2 million pensioners currently judged to be living in poverty about two-thirds are women. Women's state pension rights are frequently damaged by periods of caring for children or people with disabilities, or by periods of low paid employment, with some women receiving as little as a penny a week.
