In January 2005 the government will launch the Child Trust Fund, an investment vehicle that can run for up to 18 years. Children born after 1 September 2002 will be eligible to open one, and government will issue them with vouchers worth £250 to start saving. Children born before that date have a number of other investment options available. Friendly societies allow investments of up to £25 a month to be invested tax free.
