I have a friend, Tony, a minicab driver whom I first met as a client when he was driving for the local minicab firm. On that first job, having transported me safely to my destination, he entrepreneurially suggested it would be financially beneficial to us both if, in future, we cut out the middle man and I used him direct.

Over the years I have shared many journeys and conversations with Tony. Sharing a conversation is an overstatement, as our dialogues are about 80/20 weighted in his favour. However, he assures me this is best for both of us because the biggest risk for a customer in a cab is the driver falling asleep at the wheel; something which is much harder for him to do if he is talking. I have therefore listened to Tony a lot and we have covered numerous subjects. These have ranged from football – speciality: Dagenham and Redbridge FC – to chess, asylum seekers, religion and cars.
