Depending on what day you read this column, it marks a one of a series of significant anniversaries for me. Three years ago, on 10 August 2005, I had open heart surgery to replace two valves and repair a third. By 14 August, I was nearly dead - in fact they told my wife I wouldn't make it through the day. So every August is a bit of 'birthday' for me - and ironically this year is the 60th anniversary of the NHS, which I have to thank for saving my life. I've commented before in this column, and make no apologies for doing so again, about the amazing care that goes on within the NHS....
