Recent Tory proposals to abolish inheritance tax (IHT) are clearly designed as a vote-winner among the propertied middle class of Britain. Whether such a blatant tactic actually convinces anyone of the Conservatives' economic acumen is anyone's guess - and only a General Election will provide the answer eventually. IHT is clearly an emotive issue, despite contributing less than 1% toward total HMRC tax receipts based on 2006/07 estimates. But wherever you stand on the debate politically, a more interesting question is what abolishing the tax would mean for the financial services industry....
