Draghi joins calls for Greek debt relief as Lagarde slams bailout plan

European Central Bank president Mario Draghi has joined the ranks of policymakers calling for Greece to be given debt relief as the central bank extends its liquidity lifeline to the country's banks.

Speaking at the ECB’s press conference yesterday, Draghi said it is “uncontroversial” to say Greece is in need of debt relief.   The view aligns him with the International Monetary Fund and even the likes of UK PM David Cameron, who told Parliament on Wednesday that debt relief “must be right” for Athens.   The views are despite the country’s latest bailout deal from its eurozone creditors, the framework for which was agreed in marathon talks on Sunday night, making no mention of a debt writedown.   Draghi also used yesterday’s press conference to reveal the ECB has extended the amoun...
