Allianz GI launches US small cap fund

Allianz Global Investors has brought its US small cap growth strategy to the UK via the launch of a new fund.

The  Allianz US Small Cap Equity fund will be run by San Diego-based manager John McCraw, manager of the US-domiciled Small Cap Growth fund, and his team.

The team's strategy focuses on US companies with a market capitalisation of between $100m and $3bn, and draws on local knowledge and "on-the-ground access" to potential portfolio companies.

McCraw said: "The US small cap universe is enormous, stocked full of technology, health care, consumer and energy companies that have the potential to become tomorrow’s mid- and large-cap winners.

“Smaller companies are often in the growth phase of their lifecycles, which means the scope for their profits and stock price to grow is greater. That tends to be particularly true when the economy is recovering, with the growth bias of small caps resulting in particularly strong performance."

Investment Week first reported on plans for the fund launch in April. Allianz sales director Daniel Lee said the focus on small caps will help differentiate the fund in a competitive market.
