Johan Swahn has joined Skagen Funds as a portfolio manager on its flagship €5.6bn Global fund.

Swahn, a former Morgan Stanley analyst, will join the firm in March. He has more than 13 years' investment experience, including managing the Swedish fund Stena Long Term Equity over the past five years.

Skagen Global lead portfolio manager Kristian Falnes said: “We look forward to welcoming Johan to Skagen. He brings valuable experience to the team with wide-ranging analytical and investment expertise across a diverse range of sectors and geographies.”

The appointment of Swahn comes after global equity manager Torkell Eide left the team in July 2013, in the second high-profile exit from Skagen within a year. A spokesman said the gap between Eide’s departure and the new hire represented the firm’s desire to find the right candidate.

Swahn said: “I am very excited to be joining Skagen as part of the global team and believe my long-term, bottom-up approach to portfolio management will be an excellent fit with Skagen’s own very successful investment philosophy.”

The other Skagen Global managers are Søren Milo Christensen and Chris Tommy Simonsen.

Over the three years to 10 January, the fund has returned 20.9%, compared to an International Equities sector average of 20.2%, according to FE.
