UK unemployment rose by 118,000 in the three months to November to 2.69 million, the highest level since 1996.
Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures released today showed the jobless rate has risen to 8.4%, up from 8.3% in the previous quarter. Youth unemployment has climbed to 1.04 million, taking the unemployment rate in the 16-24 year-old age group to 22.3%. Meanwhile, the number of people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance in December rose by 1,200 to 1.6 million. The figures will deepen concerns Britain is heading back into recession.
