BlackRock has blamed stock selection for the bulk of its Smaller Companies Trust's underperformance in the first quarter. Several core holdings saw their share prices perform poorly, with manager Mike Prentis naming Alternative Networks, Chemring, Mouchel and Connaught as dragging returns. He says although Alternative Networks has seen a little weakness and Mouchel failed to win several of the new contracts it tendered for, he will continue to hold all within the portfolio, on the grounds of having strong fundamentals.
