The FTSE closed at 4,101.16, down 66.17 on the day (1.58%), despite a steady climb throughout late afternoon trading from its low of 4059.77. The biggest drop hit Xstrata, with the mining company sliding 8.92% to 546.50p. Commercial property group Liberty International followed close behind, losing 8.31% to 397.25, after negative response to news it will be doing a rights issue. Friends Provident, meanwhile, slid 7.38% to 57.70p following its Q1 results revealed total sales fell 40% over the period.
