After 40 years in the financial industry, Rathbones chief executive may take on non-executive roles and retains same desire to continue to face the markets

“The year came in to a universal chorus of despair, but went out with the optimists clearly in the ascendant.” This could be a valid description of 2009, when the FTSE rose 21% after falling 32% in 2008, bringing fresh hope to investors who had seen the world teeter of financial implosion. But it is not. It is the description of 1975 by the Unit Trust Association – forerunner of the IMA. The FTSE jumped 57% that year, after hitting a post-war nadir early in the period.
