Public finances are in a total mess and need a solution. Even so, the Budget was both depressing and unfair. Depressing because it did not have the honesty to admit the full scale of the problem, and unfair because it reversed too many earlier promises. How can anyone plan their finances effectively if they cannot trust the rules? The removal of personal allowances for some, the introduction of an even higher tax rate and the tapering down of pension tax breaks were certainly bad enough news for high earners.
