There are a number of parallels between picking a winning football team and building a successful portfolio. As well as finding the best performers, it is vital to make sure they fit together well.

AXA Wealth's head of investing Adrian Lowcock argues you would not dream of sending out a team with 11 strikers and similarly, you would be reckless to base your portfolio around just emerging markets funds for example. It is also wise to have a blend of styles that can cope with varying conditions and funds that come from different groups.
