Following news that Gary Greenberg will be stepping back from running the £3.9bn Hermes Global Emerging Markets and Global Emerging Markets SMID Equity funds and passing on lead portfolio manager duties to co-portfolio manager Kunjal Gala, Lauren Mason speaks to the duo about their experience working together and what the future holds for both of them.
Looking towards the future
After September this year, Greenberg will step back as portfolio manager of the funds but will remain head of global emerging markets, overseeing asset allocation, stock selection and team management duties until he retires in 2022.
"I will most miss the joy of discovering new ideas and watching them work," the manager said. "It is a very gratifying experience to find something the rest of the world hasn't cottoned on to and then watch everybody get excited.
"That said, over the next two years I am still going to be involved with stock initiations, so I can still contribute ideas in that way."
After Greenberg retires in 2022, Gala said he will leave behind some difficult shoes to fill.
"We hardly ever have major differences of opinion. We think alike, and when you think alike, you get a good level of support, so there is a joint conviction that builds up," he explained.
"What I also like is the coaching that Gary has been giving me and the rest of the team - he does this in a very soft manner so as to improve ourselves and become better investors over time. That is something I will miss after Gary leaves in 2022 - it will be a void that will be very difficult to fill.
"Not just for me personally, but for the entire team. We will have to think about that and how we fill that void later on. But until then, we will make the most of Gary's time before he retires in 2022."
