Co-op chief tenders resignation from 'ungovernable' group

Euan Sutherland, group chief executive of the troubled Co-operative Group, has offered to resign from his role less than a year in to the job, saying the company is "ungovernable".

According to reports, Sutherland - who is also at the centre of a row about plans to hike his pay - has offered to quit the business after warning last month the business had endured "perhaps the worst year" in its history. Sutherland said in the letter outlining his resignation he believes the group is "ungovernable" under its current structure. To persuade him to stay, the board has agreed to restructure so it can be managed in a more conventional way.
