Jupiter's Whitmore beats UK peers with focus on recovery plays

Ben Whitmore has managed the Jupiter UK Special Situations fund since November 2006, and during his tenure the fund has shot to the top quartile of the UK All Companies sector, driven by his focus on the market's best turnaround stories.

Joining Jupiter from Schroders, where he spent 12 years managing portfolios including the Schroder Recovery fund, the manager uses a contrarian, value approach to stock selection, borrowing techniques from the field of behavioural finance. He tries to identify companies that have fallen out of favour but are well-managed and have resilient balance sheets. Currently, these companies are typically exposed to Western economies rather than highly-rated plays on Asian growth.
