Euro falls to 11-year low versus yen

The euro has slipped to an 11-year low against the Japanese yen as Spanish debt woes continue to weigh on the single currency.

The euro fell to 94.37 yen in Asian trade, its lowest level since November 2000, following the Spanish region Valencia's request to the central government for financial help from a new rescue fund. Over the weekend it also emerged Catalonia - the Northern Spanish region which contains Barcelona - is seeking aid. Last week the country's troubles pushed the yield on Spanish 10-year bonds up a quarter percentage point to 7.28%, and Spain's Ibex stock index tumbled almost 6%, its worst fall in two years.
