The latest Dividend Monitor report from Capita Registrars has unveiled the top ten dividend paying stocks in the UK market last year.
Among the top ten is a host of familiar names, with oil and gas giant Royal Dutch Shell retaining its position as the number one dividend payer. Shell paid out £6.7bn last year, which is one tenth of the total UK dividend payout. Vodafone and HSBC are in second and third place respectively, but Capita added Vodafone is likely to usurp Shell from its number one position in 2012. Vodafone is set to pay £2bn at the beginning of February thanks to a special dividend it will recieve from its stake in Verizon Wireless.
