FTSE flat despite strong retail results

The FTSE 100 is flat this morning, up 6.26 points (0.11%) at 5573.67, with retailer Next leading the index's gainers following today’'s profit announcement.

The clothes retailer revealed pre-tax profit rose 15% to 213m in the six months to the end of July, with sales up by 5% to £1.59bn. Despite the retailer's warning that soaring cotton prices and a fall in credit will impact growth in consumer spending, Next is up 3.92% to 80p. Meanwhile, gold miner African Barrick Gold has retreated on yesterday's gains when the price of gold reached an all-time high, down 1.37% to 8.5p, while Randgold is down 0.08% to 5p.
