Gilbert de Botton, founding chairman of Global Asset Management, has died aged 65. De Botton, who died of a heart attack, set up GAM in 1983 with 40% backing from Lord Rothschild, starting with around £1m in assets under management. This had grown to $13.9bn by 1999 when the group was sold to UBS, with de Botton feeling that the group needed a large parent to develop further. GAM became one of the first investment firms to move into internet private banking as well as offering a range of retail funds.
