Ulrich creeps up the rankings with focus on balance sheets

Low-profile F&C manager says attracting investors to mid-caps tough in current climate.

Low-profile mid-cap manager Michael Ulrich has been creeping quietly up the rankings in the IMA UK All Companies sector, achieving top-quartile returns with his focus on balance sheets and low stock turnover. With close to 300 funds in the sector, Ulrich’s success is all the more noteworthy, as he has outperformed star manager names including AXA Framlington’s Nigel Thomas and Fidelity’s Sanjeev Shah. The F&C UK Mid Cap fund has returned 50% over three years against a 19.6% average for the sector, according to Morningstar, and 2.2% over one year against a sector average fall of 5.3%. ...
