Bond ETFs emerge as winner in 2016 battle to attract investors

Bond ETFs were the best-selling asset type within the European exchange-traded fund (ETF) industry during 2016, according to the European ETF Market Report from Thomson Reuters Lipper.

European-listed fixed income products drew in a net €19.1bn over the 12-month period. European corporate bond ETFs were among the three top-selling Lipper asset classifications, taking in €5.5bn, while US corporate bonds, EMD and inflation-linked bonds also proved popular. The only bond category that saw outflows during the year was government bonds in the European Monetary Union (EMU), with investors seeking more attractive returns elsewhere.
