Speakers at July Markets Forum will cover all asset classes

Speakers at this year's Investment Week July Markets Forum will cover the full range of asset classes, including equities, bonds, commodities and property.

As usual, the forum will take place on the day of the Fund Manager of the Year awards, 10 July, at the Radisson Edwardian Mayfair Hotel in London.

Meanwhile, the 13th annual awards ceremony will see managers recognised in 17 different individual categories plus two group awards and a lifetime achievement.

Investment Week has welcomed two new members to the judging panel this year in the form of Hargreaves Lansdown's Mark Dampier and Richard Romer-Lee from OBSR.

They join Gary Potter and Robert Burdett from Thames River, John Chatfeild-Roberts of Jupiter and John Husselbee of North, plus Investment Week editor James Smith and Incisive Media's group editorial director Lawrence Gosling.

The first stage of the judging process involves running a quants screen across the on- and offshore fund universe, using statistics provided by Morningstar up to 31 March 2008.

Looking at each fund's percentile ranking within its sector over each of the three discrete years to 31 March, the screen gives a 20% weighting to the percentile ranking achieved during the 12 months to 31 March 2006, 30% to the period to 31 March 2007 and 40% to the year to 31 March 2008.

In addition, a 10% weighting is given to the fund's sortino ratio, using a basic cash proxy as the risk-free rate.

These four separate figures are added up to give a single number, with the highest possible score being 100.

The panel then strips out any fund with less than £15m of assets as of 31 March 2008, as well as those not in the top half of their peer group over the 12 months to the same date.

All the shortlisted managers are asked to fill in a detailed questionnaire and the panel uses these to determine the eventual winners.
