So why does Investment Week go to so much time and expense to organise a big bash at the Royal Albert Hall and dish out gongs to fund managers?

Because we love a good party at a time when the rest of the economy is feeling the pinch? Because we reckon we can predict which fund managers are going to have the best performance over the next couple of years? No, it is none of those reasons, although admittedly it is quite cool to be able to hang out in the Royal Albert Hall, usually the domain of the Proms or Take That!
