If the European Union doesn't stand for fairness between big and small countries, then it doesn't stand for very much. Earlier this month, Lithuania was told it wasn't eligible to join the euro - the first EU member to be rejected in its bid to convert to the region's single currency. That was an outrageously unfair decision. The nation failed to meet the convergence criteria by the narrowest of margins.
