While high levels of growth are not expected in the UK, its defensive qualities make it the cautious investor's choice as confidence slowly returns. Over the three years to 30 May, in sterling terms, the FTSE All-Share returned -27.97%, while over the same period, the S&P 500 fell by 35.95%.
