New Star's poaching of UK manager Stephen Whittaker last year placed him and his former Perpetual colleague Ed Burke in direct competition. Whittaker was formerly head of UK equities at Perpetual, part of a highly regarded team consisting of Burke, Neil Woodford and Graham Kitchen. He joined New Star in July 2002, taking over the £173m UK Growth fund from chief investment officer Alan Miller.
