Higher yielding stocks are the default option for anyone relying on capital to generate income currently, but the outlook is decidedly mixed. Oil prices remaining lower for longer will place growing pressure on Royal Dutch Shell and BP, two of the FTSE's biggest dividend payers. Both say they will at least maintain, but not grow, quarterly dividend payments. Longer term, their pay-outs may have to be cut if earnings remain under pressure.
