Gervais Williams says he will never again achieve 60% outperformance on his Gartmore Opportunities trust, which he says was thanks to the put option he held throughout 2008. The head of smaller companies at the group extended the terms of his put positions, which had failed to protect against slides in the smaller companies market in 2007.
