The US SEC aims to protect investors, maintain fair and efficient markets and promote capital formation with a view to sustaining economic growth. The SEC maintains that investors should have access to certain basic facts about an investment before they buy it and for as long as they hold it. To achieve this, it requires public companies to disclose financial and other information to the public to create a common pool of knowledge for investors to use when deciding whether to buy, sell or hold a particular security.
