It is not often that one comes across genuinely surprising statistics these days - but when it comes to the investment management industry, a few have come up recently. For example, according to Capco Research, last year 50% of hedge funds failed due to operational failures rather than investment risks. Perhaps more amazingly, research carried out by the Bank of New York found that 41% of institutional investors considered outstanding risk management to be the main factor in deciding which fund managers they allocate mandates to.
